RPVOT Testing for Lubricating Oils: ASTM D2272 Oxidation Stability Test

Lubricating oils are constantly exposed to heat, oxygen and operating stress, which gradually reduce their performance and service life. Oil oxidation can lead to varnish formation, sludge deposits, increased acidity and premature equipment wear.

RPVOT testing (Rotating Pressure Vessel Oxidation Test) is an important laboratory method used to evaluate the oxidation stability of lubricating oils, particularly turbine oils.

At Atlas Lab, we support industries with lubricant testing and oil condition monitoring services to help identify oil degradation and improve machinery reliability.

What Is RPVOT Testing?

RPVOT testing, conducted according to ASTM D2272, measures the oxidation stability of lubricating oils under accelerated conditions.

The test involves exposing an oil sample to oxygen at elevated temperature inside a rotating pressure vessel containing water and a copper catalyst.

The result is expressed in minutes, indicating the oil's resistance to oxidation under the test conditions.

A reduction in RPVOT values over time may indicate declining oxidation resistance and the need for further lubricant condition assessment.

Why Is RPVOT Testing Important?

Regular RPVOT testing helps industries:

  • Monitor lubricant oxidation stability and degradation.
  • Identify declining oxidation resistance before serious oil deterioration.
  • Support condition-based maintenance and oil replacement decisions.
  • Reduce risks associated with sludge and varnish formation.
  • Improve lubricant management and machinery reliability.

RPVOT testing is particularly valuable for steam turbines, gas turbines and industrial circulating oil systems, where lubricant performance is critical to continuous operations.

RPVOT and MPC Testing: A Complete Oil Condition Assessment

While RPVOT testing measures oxidation stability, MPC testing (ASTM D7843) helps assess varnish-related degradation products in lubricating oils.

Combining RPVOT with MPC, Total Acid Number (TAN), FTIR oxidation analysis and viscosity testing provides a more comprehensive understanding of lubricant condition.

RPVOT Testing Services at Atlas Lab

Atlas Lab provides lubricant analysis and oil condition monitoring services for industries including power generation, marine, oil and gas, manufacturing and heavy engineering.

Our testing services help maintenance teams monitor lubricant health, identify potential problems and make informed maintenance decisions.
