PFOS and PFAS Testing for Textiles: Why Fabric Safety and Compliance Matter

PFOS and PFAS testing for textiles is becoming increasingly important for manufacturers, exporters, importers, retailers, brands, buying houses, testing consultants and industrial users. PFAS chemicals have been widely used in textile finishing because they can provide water resistance, oil resistance, stain resistance and dirt repellency. These properties are useful in performance fabrics, outdoor clothing, uniforms and protective textiles, but they also create environmental and regulatory concerns.

For textile companies, PFAS testing is no longer only a technical requirement. It is becoming a buyer requirement, export requirement, brand safety requirement and sustainability requirement. International markets are tightening restrictions on PFAS in consumer products, including clothing, footwear and textile materials. France has introduced a national PFAS ban covering clothing textiles from January 2026, while broader EU and global restrictions continue to develop. This means textile businesses should not wait for a customer complaint or shipment rejection before checking their materials.

Textile products commonly tested for PFAS and PFOS

Atlas Lab supports PFAS, PFOS and PFOA testing for a wide range of textile and fabric-related products. The testing requirement depends on the product type, market, buyer specification and suspected finishing chemistry.

Common textile products tested for PFAS include waterproof fabrics, water-repellent fabrics, stain-resistant fabrics, oil-repellent fabrics, coated textiles, laminated fabrics, outdoor clothing, rainwear, jackets, uniforms, workwear, industrial protective clothing, firefighter turnout gear, marine protective clothing, airport safety clothing, oil and gas workwear, high-performance sportswear, upholstery fabric, carpets, rugs, curtains, mattress fabrics, technical textiles, canvas, tarpaulin materials, tents, bags, backpacks, footwear textiles and treated leather or synthetic leather.

PFAS testing may also be required for textile chemicals, finishing agents, coating formulations, water-repellent treatments, stain-repellent treatments, textile wastewater, ETP discharge, ETP sludge, wash water, rinse water and contaminated textile waste.

Why PFAS testing for textiles is important

PFAS textile testing helps companies answer a simple but important question: Does this product contain restricted fluorinated chemicals?

For exporters and brands, this matters because buyers are increasingly asking for PFAS-free declarations, restricted substance compliance and third-party testing. For manufacturers, it helps verify whether raw materials, coatings or finishing chemicals are introducing PFAS into the product. For sustainability and compliance teams, it supports environmental due diligence and responsible chemical management.

PFAS testing is especially important when the product claims water repellency, stain resistance, oil resistance or high-performance protection. These claims may indicate that fluorinated chemistry has been used, although non-fluorinated alternatives are now available in many applications.

How PFAS testing in textiles is done

PFAS testing in textiles may involve targeted analysis for specific compounds such as PFOS, PFOA, PFHxS, PFNA, PFBS, PFHxA, PFHpA, PFDA and other PFAS compounds, depending on the requirement. LC-MS/MS is commonly used because it can identify and quantify specific PFAS compounds at low levels. For broader screening, total fluorine or extractable organic fluorine may be used to understand whether fluorinated substances are present, although these screening methods do not identify individual PFAS compounds by themselves.

The correct testing approach depends on the objective. A buyer compliance test may require a defined PFAS list. A product investigation may need a wider PFAS panel. A manufacturing audit may include finished fabric, raw fabric, coating chemical, wastewater and sludge samples. This is why sample selection and test scope are important.

PFAS testing for textile manufacturers and exporters

Textile manufacturers and exporters should consider PFAS testing if they supply to Europe, the United States or global brands with restricted substance requirements. Testing is also advisable if the product is waterproof, oil-resistant, stain-resistant, coated, laminated, treated with durable water repellent chemistry, or used in protective and performance applications.

PFAS testing can help avoid shipment delays, buyer rejection, compliance disputes and reputational risk. It also helps manufacturers shift towards safer alternatives and verify that replacement chemistries are genuinely PFAS-free.

Why choose Atlas Lab for PFAS and PFOS textile testing?

Atlas Lab helps clients with PFAS testing for textiles, PFOS testing, PFOA testing, fabric testing, treated textile testing, coated fabric testing, water-repellent textile testing, stain-resistant textile testing, protective clothing testing and textile wastewater testing.

Our team supports clients in choosing the correct sample type and testing scope. In many cases, the right approach is not only to test the final fabric, but also to check the finishing chemical, wash water, ETP discharge or sludge if contamination risk is suspected. This gives a better understanding of where PFAS may be entering the production process.

At Atlas Lab, our focus is to provide accurate testing, clear reporting and practical support so textile manufacturers, exporters, brands and industrial users can make informed compliance and sourcing decisions.
