In modern industrial systems, the performance and reliability of machinery heavily depend on the condition of lubricating oil. One of the most critical aspects of oil quality is particle contamination, which can significantly impact equipment life and efficiency. ISO 4406 oil cleanliness testing is a globally recognised method used to measure and classify the level of particulate contamination in hydraulic and lubricating oils. By understanding and controlling contamination levels, industries can prevent equipment failure, reduce maintenance costs, and improve overall operational performance.
ISO 4406 is an international standard that defines how to quantify and report the number of solid particles present in oil. The standard provides a numerical code that represents contamination levels based on particle counts at specific micron sizes—typically ≥4µm, ≥6µm, and ≥14µm.
The result is expressed in a three-number code format such as 18/16/13, where each number corresponds to the concentration of particles at different sizes. The higher the number, the greater the level of contamination in the oil.
This standardised method allows industries to monitor oil cleanliness consistently, compare results across systems, and maintain equipment according to recommended cleanliness levels.
Oil contamination is one of the leading causes of machinery failure, especially in hydraulic systems, gearboxes, turbines, and compressors. Even microscopic particles can cause significant damage over time by increasing wear and reducing efficiency.
ISO 4406 testing helps industries:
By maintaining oil cleanliness within recommended ISO limits, companies can significantly reduce unplanned downtime and costly repairs.
ISO 4406 testing is performed using automatic particle counters or microscopic analysis techniques. The oil sample is analysed to determine the number of particles present at defined size ranges. These counts are then converted into ISO codes based on standardised ranges.
For example:
Different types of equipment require different cleanliness levels. For instance, high-pressure hydraulic systems demand much cleaner oil compared to less critical applications.
ISO 4406 oil cleanliness testing is widely used across various industries, including:
In all these applications, maintaining oil cleanliness is essential for reliable and efficient performance.
